Has anyone (lately) taken note of the original Village People? Mr. Biker dude is one *sexy* beast of a man. And the...workman dude? I'm pretty sure some of the moves he makes with his hips are illegal in all fifty states and everywhere else. Yoinks.

I have comments to respond to! (Yeah, that hasn't changed over the years. Some things never do.) But. The apartment thing I'd been asked to co-sign with/for, has turned out to be a sketchy thing that made Donnie back out quickly. So that's a non-issue; they found a brand new apartment complex -- they have units ready, but the complex is still being built -- that doesn't need a co-signer.

Now I think I'm going to watch some Call The Midwife until I fall asleep.

Facts: Moxie Soda

1.) It was created around 1876 by Augustin Thompson in Lowell, Massachusetts. This sweet soda tastes a bit like root beer, but it also has a bitter aftertaste. Its unique flavor comes from gentian root extract, which is a very bitter plant part used in herbal medicine. (I've never had it. Sorry, it just never spread to Texas. Would I try it? Sorry, no, I no longer drink soda or any kind.)

2.) The name "Moxie" has also become a word in American English. It means having lots of energy, determination, and courage. (I heard that term often when listening to elders talk about their youth. 'Janice, we knew she would make it, because she had a lot of spunk and Moxie.)

Facts: Pepsi-Cola

1.) Pepsi, originally known as “Brad’s Drink,” was invented in 1893 by Caleb Bradham, a pharmacist from New Bern, North Carolina. It was initially created as a digestive aid and energy booster. (No cocaine to be found in it's formula. Just sugar, cola and the fizz.)

2.) In 1984, Pepsi introduced Diet Pepsi with caffeine, becoming the first company to offer a diet cola with caffeine. This innovation catered to consumers seeking a low-calorie alternative without sacrificing their caffeine fix. (Straight up, I have a things against diet sodas. All of them. Full stop. People drink more thinking it's healthy. Wake up, soda isn't healthy.)

No, I do. Stuck right here, in the third circle of Hell.

(One of) Today's highlight(s): Donnie standing in the kitchen telling me that my curtains weren't going to be up much longer because they smelled "like cat piss". Everyone in my house uses that phrase, and I don't know why it bothers me so much. (I say cat pee. *shrug*) Anyway, I don't know if she just means to take them down and wash them, or throw them away. I'm fine with the former; the latter is only going to happen if she's buying me replacement ones.

Anyway. Cats peeing. We didn't realize until AFTER she turned the burner on... one of them (most likely her cat, Skye, because she has major anxiety out here) peed on the big burner on the stove. Right on the element. I've never smelled anything so burning and acrid in my life. I hit the inhaler several times, and then sat with two fingers under my nose. The true highlight of that was that I asked if she could please open the kitchen window, and she said, "then it'll be even hotter in here". While she has the oven on, cooking dinner for her and Megan. Never mind that both me, and Megan, have diagnosed asthma.

Night before last (I think; I lose track) Matthew and Madisyn told me they wanted me to stay with them -- in a different apartment, not this one. They say it would make more sense to stay together to save money for when we move out of state in a couple of years, and separate our households then, as opposed to now. I was telling Donnie that they want the three of us to stay together, and she said "well, that's news to me, a few nights ago when we were smoking, they were talking about how they're tired of living with you and you've said you're tired with living with them". So I called M/M out and told them what Donnie had said, then asked Donnie to come out. Because she's said some things in the past that Madisyn said wasn't true, and I wanted to know who was saying what.

It devolved into such a fucking mess. All I wanted to know was what was the most current feeling and in the end I was accused of "calling everyone out to start drama at 11 o'clock at night" which I hadn't been doing. I just wanted to know. Then, when I was trying to say what she'd said to me, I used the word "miserable" (probably because it's been the word uppermost in my mind for DAYS), and she flipped the fuck out. Flat out yelled at me -- and cussed at me, to boot -- "Don't you FUCKING put WORDS INTO MY MOUTH", and on it went. Matthew stepped in and asked her to calm down. I apologized for saying that, that I wasn't trying to put words into anyone's mouth. What followed after that was about a half hour of me alternately sobbing, and asking Madisyn why she thinks I don't like her. She mentioned how I told her I was jealous of her, and yes, I did say that to her...four years ago. When she first got here, and I'd never really had to share Matthew's time/attention with anyone. Then she brought up how I'd asked her friend Kayla last fall if Madisyn could come to live with her. I said yeah, I'd asked Kayla that, but there was a lot going on at that time, including Matthew jumping back and forth from "I want a divorce from her" to "I love her she's my life"...and it was just an awful time. We talked some about that, and some other stuff, and meanwhile I'm crying and yeah. It was a pretty awful night. I think it was Friday night, actually.

Donnie and Megan are planning to look at a place -- an apartment -- tomorrow afternoon. They want to move in on September first, and Donnie has asked me if I would co-sign on the lease for them. I said I could do that, but now I'm thinking, what happens if they DO default on their rent? My name will (probably) be on Matthew and Madisyn's lease...can I be on their lease as a lessee, but also be a co-signer for someone? Does anyone know the answer to that?

God, this entry got long. Many thanks to anyone who reads it all the way through.

Facts: Coca-Cola

1.) In 1886, Coca-Cola sold nine servings of its drinks per day in its first year; now it has over 2.2 billion servings consumed daily worldwide, which is about 25,500 every second. (It had absolutely nothing to do with the cocaine in it. No, absolutely not that.)

2.) Coca-Cola does not contain cocaine today; however, it uses a flavoring derived from coca leaves that has had the cocaine removed, known as "decocainized" coca leaf extract. (So, it does contain cocaine by-product. Doesn't sound very safe to me.)

Facts: Karate

1.) Karate as we know it today originated from ancient fighting arts which began thousands of years ago. Drawings of men in karate-like stances are found on the wall of an ancient Egyptian tomb dated around 5000 years ago. Karate blocking techniques are also found in some Babylonian artworks dating back 3000 to 2000 B.C.

2.) Traditional Okinawan karate remains an art of self-defense that emphasizes mental development and character building, Japanese karate has become more of a competitive sport.

Facts:

1.) The word “pineapple” was first recorded in English in 1398 after the Europeans discovered the fruit in South America. They thought that it looked like a large pinecone, but the flesh was sweet, like an apple. (I'll concede that it sort of resembles a young pinecone, but it tastes nothing like an apple.)

2.) Pineapples are primarily cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. They thrive in warm climates with abundant sunlight. (I managed to get one to grow, but never fruit.)

2.) In 1996, he underwent a career renaissance upon adopting the villainous persona of "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan, leading the popular New World Order stable. (His acting was so cheesy!)

Facts: Casino

1.) In 1638, Casino di Venezia, the first recorded casino opened. It was closed in 1774 in order to 'preserve the piety’ of the city. It reopened its doors 1959 and has been open ever since. (I am not 100% sure, that the ancient Romans likely had places to indulge in gambling.)

2.) The pioneers of the Las Vegas casino industry weren't all male mobsters: the first legal casino license was issued to a woman named Mayme Stocker in 1920 for the Northern Club. Stocker was a respectable wife and mother who was frequently written about in the local newspaper society pages. (It's just after that the cads and mobsters moved in to build the city of sin.)

2.) In one of his more infamous incidents, Ozzy added something special to a cake offered to a vicar, causing the vicar to pass out and requiring a three-day recovery. (I wonder how many conversations the Vicar had with the man upstairs during his recovery.)

Facts: Scary

1.) Scaphism was an ancient form of torture and execution where you’d cover someone with honey, stick them in a hollowed log, and let nature run its course. (Can we bring this back? It can be the punishment for anyone proven *100% proven* guilty of extreme child abuse or murder. Yes, I am vicious.

2.) You could be trapped in a coma-like state and be aware of it. Locked-in Syndrome might just be the most terrifying medical condition. It’s when you’re stuck between being asleep and awake. You know you’re awake and can hear and see things around you. However, can’t talk and can only move your eyes, so you’re unable to respond to anything. (I have been trapped in that state after my first seizure. It was frustrating and terrifying. I was in tears trying to answer. I was hospitalized a day before I could talk and a week for walking.)

Facts: Wes Craven

1.) The inspiration for the iconic slasher film came from a story he read from the LA Times: a boy was having disturbing nightmares and refused to sleep for days out of fear. The same night he succumbed to exhaustion, he died in his sleep, but not before screaming for help in the middle of the night because of his nightmares. (Even though I find the horror campy and funny. This does lend to the horror angle.)

2.) His works tend to explore the breakdown of family structures, the nature of dreams and reality, and often feature black humor and satirical elements. (I am a jaded horror fan. If you can get me to jump, kudos.)

So I think I made the decision tonight to give living on my own a shot. I could stay with Matthew and Madisyn/they could stay with me. Po-tay-toh Po-tah-toh. But I think they need a place where they can just be a couple, and I...would like my own place.

I want somewhere where the kitchen is MINE. Where there won't be things put where I don't want them put. Where I'm not afraid of putting something in the wrong place. Where I can just lay my dishes out on a towel to dry, rather than this ridiculous dish rack that goes up over the sink, that I can't reach if I'm sitting down. I don't want to have to share my bathroom. I want to know that my home isn't going to be overwhelmed by the smell of cat pee and cat shit.

I will miss Matthew (he'll still be in Etown; they'll possibly be in the same apartment complex). It'll be hard, and it'll be painful, but I'm really tired of living with other people. With living with THESE people. For example, tonight: Matthew and I were have a minor disagreement about the dishes that need to be washed. All of a sudden Donnie is butting in, all "what's wrong?" When I said it was nothing, she said, "you're lying, what's wrong?" And even though it had nothing to do with her, she wouldn't butt out until I'd said what it was, and then she jumped down Matthew's throat, saying everything I'd just said to him, in almost the exact order. I'm so tired of someone jumping in (usually it's Donnie) to a discussion/argument that's none of their business. I don't have to be a genius to know my opinion wouldn't be welcome if she and Megan were having an argument.

So, yeah. I'd like my own place.

I found an apartment up behind Kroger. All single story, wider doorways, no carpeting, walk-in shower. But. They want $899/mo, and you have to have three times the monthly rent, in income, and I'm nowhere near that. And much as I'd like to, I'd love to say Matthew will cosign, and that he'll pay my rent every month. But that's not fair to him.

The lease for the place we're in isn't up until the end of October. So I have some time to look around -- I will probably have Charis, my Medicaid case worker, help me out with what's available, etc. If I get into low-income housing, I can get it for 30% of my monthly income. Which is $967. So basically about $270. And if I'm careful, I can pay my bills and get groceries, and still have a bit left over.

So fingers crossed for me, please. I'm likely to have a couple of panic attack/meltdowns over this whole affair before it's done. But I do think it would be a good thing for me.

x-posted to my Livejournal. Comment, if you want, wherever is convenient for you :)

Facts: William Shakespeare

1.) His legacy doesn’t stop at his plays and how many words he created – but even in the afterlife, he leaves a lasting display of his wit. Buried in 1616, the playwright was said to write his tombstone inscription which reads: “Good friend, for Jesus’ sake forebeare, To digg the dust enclosed heare; Bleste be the man that spares thes stones, And curst be he that moves my bones.” (he put a curse upon his grave. I love it!)

2.) He had close connections with King James I. The King made the actors of Shakespeare’s company ‘Grooms of Chamber’, in response to which Shakespeare changed the company’s name from the ‘Lord Chamberlain’s Men’ to the ‘King’s Men’. The new title made Shakespeare a favourite with the King and in much demand for Court performances. (I don't know why, but I always thought that he was disliked by the royals. Made an ass out of me for assuming.)

For me the saddest example of Caroline's mothering was when Ken was going to tell her about killing Andrew Dodds, and she decided to leave without warning instead. Harriet Walter, who plays Caroline, said that Caroline was afraid Kendall was going to criticize her as a mother, but Caroline specifically asks if Ken intends to criticize her and he specifically says that's not what it's about. Honestly, I think if Kendall had intended to criticize her she wouldn't have run away. I think she knew how to react to that and how to deal with that. But she didn't know how to deal with Ken confiding in her something emotional about his own life.

Caroline's best moment is in the penultimate episode. At Logan's funeral, she introduces Marcia to Sally-Anne, "my Kerry". This apparently prompts Marcia to let go of her hostility towards Kerry. Caroline demonstrates that Marcia was not the first wife of Logan to get cheated on, and had Logan lived she would probably have not been the last. In accepting Sally-Anne she encourages Marcia to accept Kerry.

Facts: Crying

1.) Though their crying habits and causes may change a lot as they age into adulthood, there is no difference between how much male and female babies cry. (Of course, they're the same. That's almost everyone's first language. There are mute babies, but every baby, no matter what language they grow up to speak, communicate by crying.)

2.) Tears are the body’s ultimate way of self-soothing when ice cream and carbs can’t even help. Crying helps us regulate our own emotions, and it enables us to calm down from the emotional or physical pain we’re trying to deal with. (There have been times when my arthritis or head hurt so much I have to cry. Does it help? Kind of, but not really. Helps more with congestion.)

Facts: Laughter

1.) Laughing when tickled in our sensitive spots (under the arms, near the throat and under our feet) could be a defensive mechanism. Research suggests that we have evolved to send this signal out to show our submission to an aggressor, to dispel a tense situation and to prevent us from getting hurt. (I learned this fact when in massage school. I changed my mindset and am not ticklish anymore. Youngest daughter understood, too. Much to out family's annoyance.)

2.) Laughter can stimulate circulation and help muscle relaxation. This leads to reduced tension in the body for up to 45 minutes after. (If you want to laugh, but there's nothing funny: try fake laughing, it usually turns into real laughter. Remember: laugh responsibly.)
